Nintendo rules out price cuts even as Wii fever begins to wane

TOKYO, April 9 Kyodo - Nintendo Co. President Satoru Iwata ruled out on Thursday any immediate plans to lower prices on its popular game consoles even as sales of its smash-hit Wii console showed infant signs of slowing down in Japan.
The Kyoto-based game creator also said it will release a new game called Wii Sports Resort in Japan in June and overseas in July in a bid to once again revitalize the game market.
”I don’t think a price cut at this stage is an efficient means” to stimulate consumer demand, Iwata told reporters at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo.
”I would rather like to focus on how to become No. 1 on the wish list,” he said.
Sales of Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3 outstripped Nintendo’s Wii for the first time in 16 months during the five weeks to March 29, according to the latest figures compiled by game magazine publisher Enterbrain Inc.
Iwata said Wii’s strength in Japan has not been maintained at the same high level seen overseas, admitting new software titles released late last year in Japan did not turn out to be long-sellers as anticipated.
But he added he does not really see Sony and other game creators as Nintendo’s rival.
”People on the outside say we are rivals, but I don’t really think so,” Iwata said.
”The more important interest for us is how to capture the attention of apathetic customers,” he said, referring to Wii’s success in drawing fans who have never played video games in the past.
While momentum in Japan is beginning to wane, Iwata said he hopes to capture rapid growth in the overseas game markets including the U.S., Europe and other parts of Asia.
Nintendo released the third-generation Nintendo DSi in the United States and Europe in early April following its debut in Japan in November 2008.
Global sales of its portable handheld DS game machines have topped 100 million units since its 2004 launch, while Nintendo has sold more than 50 million Wii consoles since its 2006 debut
